Man dies in house fire in Bay Shore

According to Suffolk County police, a man died in a house fire in Bay Shore on Tuesday.

The Brentwood Fire Department received a 911 call about the fire at 16 Oklahoma Avenue around 12:30 p.m.

A resident of the home was unable to escape and was rescued by Suffolk County police and neighbors before firefighters arrived. The resident was taken to South Shore University Hospital in critical condition.

Two firefighters also suffered minor injuries while fighting the fire. One was treated at the scene and released, the other was initially taken to hospital and then released.

Joy Silva says she saw the smoke getting darker from her home a few blocks away as the fire continued to burn.

“It was white smoke, black smoke, gray smoke. It gradually filled the whole sky,” she said. “I said go inside! I told my son and my dog, everyone go inside because the smell was very strong.”

Vincenta Rivera, who lives around the corner, says her neighbor was banging on her door as smoke poured out of the house.

“He told me there was smoke coming out the window to the left of the house,” she said. “If only you knew the sacrifices you make to have a home and how you have to fight for it. It’s sad.”
