Bills add Mike White to practice squad

Michael White is working toward an AFC East cycle. The former Jets backup/occasional starter, released by the Dolphins this week, will be signed to a contract after visiting with the Bills.

The bills are Mitchell Trubisky behind Josh Allen; White will join Buffalo’s practice squad, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL.com, giving the four-time defending AFC East champions a veteran option behind former first-round picks.

Expenditure last year as Tua Tagovailoa‘s best substitute, White lost the job to Skylar Thompson after Miami’s preseason. The Dolphins had offered White a two-year, $10 million contract for 2023. As an option for the P-team, he will settle for far less.

Thanks to the NFLPA’s rejection of the rule change, teams no longer have unlimited quarterback promotions. But Buffalo hasn’t missed a start from Allen due to injury since his rookie season. That would make this one of the more likely teams to opt for a two-QB setup.

White’s most notable NFL work came in New York. He became very popular with Jets fans during Zach Wilson‘s tenure when he replaced the struggling No. 2 pick due to injury and then for performance reasons. White helped the Jets to an upset victory over the Bengals in 2021 and became the first Jet QB to Vinny Testaverde. The 29-year-old White has a 2-5 record as a starter and brings a 62.6% completion rate to Buffalo.

Teams are allotted six spots on their P-squads for experienced veterans. Since Trubisky didn’t play well in Pittsburgh – or for most of his professional career – the Bills have a potential QB2 option set to join their 16-man taxi squad.
