Palace beat Norwich in the cup and take first win of the season

Crystal Palace defeated Norwich City at Selhurst Park to claim their first win of the season and reach the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Daichi Kamada opened the scoring with his first goal for Palace in the second minute, taking a pass from Jean-Philippe Mateta, rounding goalkeeper George Long and shooting into the empty net.

Norwich almost equalised when Gabriel Forsyth hit the outside of the post and Eberechi Eze had a goal disallowed, but eleven minutes into the second half the home side doubled their lead through Mateta’s acrobatic finish.

Mateta made it 3-0 midway through the second half with a powerful finish following an Eze assist, before Eze got on the scoresheet at the end of a storming run.

The result was bitter for Norwich, who also came close in the first half through Ante Crnac and Marcelino Nunez and went into the break with a superiority.

Mateta’s overhead kick from Kamada’s cross doubled Palace’s lead, but the Canaries continued to trouble Oliver Glasner’s team and were stopped by a fantastic double save from Dean Henderson shortly after the home side’s second goal.

The 27-year-old blocked Crnac’s shot with his right foot and also prevented the follow-up shot from substitute Oscar Schwartau.

However, Mateta’s confident finish almost dashed their hopes of returning to the competition and Eze made their misery even worse with a beautiful solo goal shortly before the end.

Both teams suffered injuries in the early stages of the game: Chadi Riad injured his knee while blocking Forsyth’s attempt and Amankwah Forson apparently dislocated his shoulder while trying to take the ball from Will Hughes.

Palace’s next game is away to Chelsea on Sunday, but there could be plenty of movement on the transfer front between now and the weekend, with the Eagles close to signing striker Eddie Nketiah from Arsenal.

Newcastle are also still interested in signing centre-back Marc Guehi before the transfer window closes on Friday.
