TESSITURA (f, 2, Medaglia d’Oro–Octave {MGISW, $1,660,934}, from Unbridled’s Song), somewhat unprepared at the start, dropping to last place and staying there while Courageous Ari (Courageous Cat) took the lead in :22.31 with an opening quarter of an hour to go. She appeared to stay leisurely despite increasing pressure from her jockey Willie Martinez and the 7-2 chance was given a left-hand reminder down the homestretch as the 10-1 pacemaker appeared to be on her way to victory. With several lengths to make up, the roan was offered an escape from her tight position as Courageous Ari continued to lead, closely pursued by Joys of Summer (Summer Front). With a brave late charge down the inside lane, Two Scoops (Always Dreaming) appeared on the scene and looked momentarily poised for victory. Yet despite running inexperienced down the middle of the stretch, Tessitura moved ahead in the final strides to beat Two Scoops by a neck. The early pacer held third place. The roan is by Octave, the winner of GI CCA Oaks and GI Mother Goose that earned Starlight Racing and trainer Todd Pletcher over $1.6 million. The mare, Unbridled’s Song, a sister to MGSW Belle Cherie (Belong to Me), is from the family of two-time Grade I winner Ms. Eloise. Octave was purchased for $350,000 by KEESEP as a yearling and subsequently earned $4 million from Godolphin’s John Ferguson at Fasig-Tipton in November 2007. The winner, a half-colt by Portamento (Ire) (Shamardal), GSP-UAE, GSP-Eng, $263,308, also has a yearling brother by Nyquist and a foal sister by Mystic Guide. Lifetime record: 1-1-0-0, $18,000.
