Midland Development Corp. facilitates Costco’s arrival in the Tall City – The UBJ

West Texans are eagerly awaiting the opening of a Costco in Midland, a development that has generated great excitement throughout the region. This isn’t the first time that a Costco has been discussed opening in Midland, but this time the deal is official, thanks in large part to the involvement of the Midland Development Corporation (MDC).

Sara Harris, the MDC’s executive director, is excited about the successful agreement, which represents a pivotal moment for the community. “In the previous agreement, the Midland Development Corporation was not involved in the negotiations to bring Costco to Midland, so I cannot comment on that, but this agreement is signed and executed by both parties and we are very pleased to welcome them,” commented Harris. The MDC’s direct involvement in this transaction represents a significant departure from previous negotiations and reflects the organization’s commitment to promoting local economic development.

The new Costco store will be built on a large site in West Midland, north of State Highway 191 and west of State Highway 158. The estimated construction time for the store is approximately two years, reflecting the size and complexity of such a project. Site selection and development were strategically planned to maximize accessibility and benefit to the community.

The MDC’s role was critical in making this deal happen. Harris explained the importance of the incentives to Costco, saying, “So it’s a ‘but for’ question, right? You have to ask, ‘Would this deal have happened without incentives?’ And with Costco, the answer is ‘no.’ Without the incentives, Costco would not enter the market.” This statement underscores the critical importance of the financial incentives offered by the MDC in attracting Costco to Midland. By demonstrating a strong commitment to supporting the retail giant, the MDC has successfully created a compelling case for Costco to invest in the area.

Under the agreement, Costco is set to receive approximately $6.5 million in reimbursement from the MDC upon completion of the store. This financial support is contingent on meeting certain conditions, including the creation of at least 100 full-time jobs. The requirement to create jobs underscores the mutual benefit of the deal: Costco will receive the necessary financial support to open a new store, while Midland will benefit from job creation and greater retail offerings.

Strong community demand for Costco was a driving force behind the deal. Harris noted that the desire for a Costco in Midland has been repeatedly expressed to MDC board members, city council members and MDC staff. “The desire for Costco has been repeated countless times to MDC board members, city council members and MDC staff. And we want to address those needs and desires of the community, and that’s what led directly to this deal,” she said. This strong community support underscores the importance of the project and the positive impact it is expected to have on the local economy.

The opening of Costco is expected to be a major boost for Midland, as residents will now have access to the store’s renowned value and extensive product selection. The store’s opening is expected to improve the retail landscape in Midland and provide residents with a wider range of shopping options. In addition, the new store will likely contribute to the region’s economic growth by creating jobs and increasing consumer spending.

In summary, the successful negotiations and upcoming opening of Costco in Midland is a significant achievement for the MDC and the city. Not only does the deal address a clear community need, but it also promises significant economic benefits for the region. With construction scheduled to begin and the store expected to open in approximately two years, Midland residents can look forward to the arrival of one of the nation’s leading retailers.
