Man charged with shooting and wounding 2-year-old in car in far east Dallas

A couple was delivering DoorDash orders when a man opened fire on their car, wounding their 2-year-old daughter, in Far East Dallas on Sunday night. The man accused of the shooting had multiple firearms as well as “many satanic and Nazi symbols” in his home, documents show.

Jason Cain, 50, was booked into the Dallas County Jail on charges of injury to a child and three counts of aggravated assault in connection with the shooting, records show. It is unclear if he has an attorney.

He is accused of shooting into the car and hitting the toddler, police said. The girl, who was taken to a hospital, has since been released, police said on Tuesday. A baby who was also in the car was not injured, according to an affidavit.

Officers responded to a call about a shooting around 8:15 p.m. Sunday in the 8500 block of Sweetwater Drive, near St. Francis Avenue, police said. Investigators found Cain near Norsworthy Drive, according to the affidavit, and he told officers that “drug dealers” involved in the shooting were down the street.

Witnesses told police they saw a man on a motorcycle following a sedan and that a man fired a handgun at the vehicle multiple times. One witness said she heard gunshots, walked toward the car and saw the girl bleeding. Another witness pointed officers to the man’s nearby home, the affidavit said.

Officers went to the house, where Cain opened his garage door and officers approached him with guns pointed at him. According to the document, he resisted arrest despite officers giving him orders.

The parents of the two-year-old girl who was shot took her to a hospital. According to an affidavit, medical staff said the two-year-old had a bullet wound in her stomach that could not be removed because it could cause further damage.

Police interviewed the toddler’s parents at a hospital. The couple told police they had been delivering DoorDash orders in the Far East Dallas neighborhood, with the 2-year-old girl and a 4-month-old baby in the back seat of their car. DoorDash did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The man and woman were looking for an address to place an order when they saw Cain riding a motorcycle in the middle of the road with the lights off and a dog in the sidecar, the affidavit states.

The man driving the sedan said he swerved to avoid a collision. The motorcyclist and driver honked at each other, and the man on the motorcycle followed the car and appeared to yell, the document said.

The couple heard gunshots and accelerated, believing they heard rocks thrown at the vehicle. They then heard the 2-year-old crying, the affidavit states. The driver told police he turned around, saw his daughter bleeding and stopped the car.

When the two got out of the car, they saw the man holding a gun and pointing it at their heads, the affidavit states. The man with the gun approached the car and looked inside before speeding away.

Officers later executed a search warrant at Cain’s home and found numerous firearms, including automatic weapons, as well as “many satanic and Nazi symbols,” according to the affidavit. Officers also found a handgun of the same caliber as the cartridges found at the crime scene.

According to documents, Cain remained in custody Tuesday morning with bail set at $850,000 for all four charges.
