Panthers get rookie cornerback from Bears in last-second trade offer

Will a promising rookie cornerback end up landing a spot on the Chicago Bears roster?

Reddy Steward signed with the Bears as an undrafted free agent following the 2024 National Football League Draft. He played college football at Troy University and was impressive all summer.

He finished the preseason on a very good note with two interceptions. Chicago seems to have a surplus of talented cornerbacks and Steward could be an interesting candidate for a transfer.

Alex Kay of Bleacher Report proposed a deal to the Carolina Panthers before Tuesday’s deadline to reduce the roster to 53 players.

“Panthers receive: CB Reddy Steward,” Kay said. “Bears receive: 2025, seventh-round pick. The Carolina Panthers hope to put a dismal 2023 season behind them and emerge as a competitive team next season. That will be a difficult task with the current cornerback talent pool that the team has, even after trading for Michael Jackson following Dane Jackson’s hamstring injury.

“With defensive back depth already a concern before losing a projected starter for an extended period, the Panthers need to continue to strengthen the position… Reddy Steward makes perfect sense as an up-and-coming cornerback who will have a tough time seeing the field for his current team. Steward joined the Bears this offseason as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Troy and has been turning heads with his promising performances over the past few months.”

Steward has quickly won the hearts of Bears fans, and by the end of the day, we will likely know if he makes the team’s 53-man roster.
