Lexi Thompson is one of the captain candidates for the US Solheim Cup team

US Solheim Cup captain Stacy Lewis completed her team on Tuesday by naming Lexi Thompson, Jennifer Kupcho and Sarah Schmelzel as her three wildcard picks.

Thompson, ranked 46th in the world, is taking part in the Solheim Cup for the seventh time in a row, Kupcho (53) is playing for the third time and Schmelzel (61) is making her debut.

The trio joined automatic qualifiers Nelly Korda, Lilia Vu, Lauren Coughlin, Ally Ewing, Allisen Corpuz, Megan Khang, Andrea Lee, Rose Zhang and Alison Lee for the Solheim Cup Sept. 13-15 at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia.

Thompson – this could be her last appearance in the Solheim Cup as she has declared that she will not play golf full-time after the 2024 season – has a 9-7-7 record in the event, while Kupcho has a career record of 2-3-2.

“With her experience, Lexi was probably the easiest choice of the three,” Lewis said. “I know what Lexi can do in a Solheim Cup and that definitely helped her get a choice.”

“She is someone who will help the team a lot, on and off the golf course. With her experience, everyone on the team will be watching what she does to try to learn from her. I am very happy to have Lexi back.”

The United States leads the Solheim Cup, a biennial competition between teams of 12 players that follows the same format as the men’s Ryder Cup, with an overall record of 10-7-1 in Europe.

Europe has held the trophy since 2019 after tying and defending it in Spain last year. The Solheim Cup is played in consecutive years to maintain an even-numbered schedule.
