NASCAR News: Daniel Suarez on the “DREAM” Cup Series race in Mexico City

Daniel Suarez said it would be a “dream” to race in Mexico City before NASCAR announced the Cup Series would move south of the border next year.

On Tuesday, NASCAR announced a deal that will see a race in the Mexican capital on June 15 next year. It will be the first points-paying Cup Series race outside the United States since 1958.

Suarez, who drives the No. 99 Chevrolet for the Trackhouse Racing team, was born in Monterrey, Mexico, so a race south of the border is a home game for him.

The 32-year-old has two Cup Series wins to his name over the years, but said in reports earlier this month that it would be a “dream” to race in his home country.

“It’s not official until it’s official,” Suárez told The Athletic.

“Honestly, it would be a dream for me. I’ve been in the Cup Series for several years and racing in my home country would be a dream.

“Since I left my country in 2011, it has been my dream to come back as a Cup Series driver. And if that happens, that would be fantastic. And winning this race would be as big for me as winning a championship.”

The news of a home race in Mexico will be a huge boost for Suarez, as he has put in some strong performances in the Cup Series recently.

Admittedly, the driver with the number 99 did not have a good time last weekend, but in the three races before that he achieved three consecutive top-10 finishes.

Things are also going well off the track, the driver with the number 99 recently married Julia Piquet – Daughter of three-time Formula 1 world champion Nelson Piquet.

With a win in Atlanta at the Ambetter Health 400 in February, Suarez’s spot in the Cup Series playoffs is secured.
