WAUSAU, WI (WAOW-WSAU) — Newman Catholic Schools is taking the first steps toward a new athletic complex.

The complex will take time, as each step requires permits and funding, the email said. However, on Monday, Newman Catholic Schools took the first steps in Phase I, with a focus on building new tennis courts.

In an email to parents and alumni of Newman Catholic, the school said the tennis team had to rent the Oak Island courts because they were “falling into disrepair.” The school’s press release said, “Once the tennis court project is complete, the Athletic Complex Capital Campaign will proceed in multiple phases.”

The complex will surround the site at Bridge St. and Wausau Ave. near the current Newman Catholic Middle and High School.

The goal is to have the new tennis courts operational by the end of the 2024 fall season.

The next phase includes a new football, soccer and track and field facility with a multi-purpose turf field.

Here is a breakdown of the next phases:

  • Phase II: Soccer/Track and Field Facility – Multi-purpose turf field with WIAA compliant track that will allow us to host home games. Phase II also includes development of the practice field toward the southwest corner, an area that will also provide upgraded areas for shot put, discus and long jump.
  • Phase III: Softball field – artificial turf field with two batting cages and lighting for night games.
  • Phase IV: Education Pavilion – outdoor stage and permanent seating that can be used as an open-air chapel, classroom and entertainment space. The celebration of our Catholic identity is highlighted during this phase by a cross, sculptures and Stations of the Cross installed on the stage.
  • Pedestrian zone: A walkway that runs throughout the complex with a focus on sculptural elements that promote our Catholic identity, a food stand, covered dining areas, restrooms, benches throughout, and a donor plaque honoring all who made this project possible.
