Axia Vegetable Seeds, an innovative vegetable seed breeder, has purchased the Seedling Scan Pro from AgriData Innovations. This system performs usable plant tests, eliminating time-consuming hand counting. In addition, it automatically saves photos of the trays so the usable plant tests are easily viewed.

The Seedling Scan Pro was developed by AgriData Innovations (ADI) from Delft. ADI specializes in camera systems and image analysis software for monitoring the growth and health of crops. In the following interview with Lidia Laan, responsible for quality assurance at Axia, you will learn more about the use of the Seedling Scan Pro, the added value of the system and the experiences with ADI.

“Axia Vegetable Seeds is an innovative company that likes to look ahead and is open to modern technologies,” says Lidia Laan, responsible for quality assurance at Axia, when asked what challenges led them to consider the Seedling Scan Pro. “In addition, with our usable plant test, we want to achieve germination rates that are as close as possible to the real situation in nurseries. A first count (7 days after sowing) is an important number for them. The Seedling Scan Pro has proven that it can properly perform this first count.”

After an extensive testing phase, in which the Axia team compared the Seedling Scan Pro counts with the manual counts, they found that these numbers were getting closer and closer together. “The good guidance and constant communication with the people at ADI were also crucial.”

Lidia adds that it is very useful that the Seedling Scan Pro can classify the seedlings, not only detecting whether they have germinated or not, but also separately identifying abnormal and small plants.

When asked how the Seedling Scan Pro impacts the efficiency and accuracy of counting and scoring seedlings, she says that the Seedling Scan Pro is very user-friendly and easy to implement. “Data collection is quick, as is data processing and converting into ready-to-use numbers for our quality database. The photos per tray are also very valuable to us.”

Overall, speed is the main improvement in the operation. “The machine evaluates much faster than manual counting.”

“The customer service and support from AgriData Innovations is excellent, results are quickly shared via an app and comments are responded to quickly. We also have a shared WhatsApp group where communication is quick and to the point,” she adds. “We are happy with the performance of our ‘mechanical colleague’. The Seedling Scan Pro works quickly and precisely, never complains and does not take long breaks.”
