What is the blood moon?

Whether you’re a new player or you’re back in the game and need a refresher course, you should learn all the knowledge that will increase your chances of survival. To that end, let’s talk about the all-important Blood Moon.

The Blood Moon occurs every seven days (though you can change this time frame in the game settings). When the red moon rises, a unique horde appears nearby and immediately heads toward your position.

It all starts with that one wave of hordes attacking your position. Whether you’re in a base or not, whether you’re staying completely still or firing away with firearms one at a time, the horde always knows exactly where you are. But after you defeat the first wave, things only get worse – more waves of undead appear until the end of the Blood Moon at 4am.

These hordes consist of different numbers and types of zombies. The number and type of hordes depends on your stage of the game and is calculated based on your player level, difficulty level and number of days survived.

While it’s entirely possible to survive a blood moon if you’re playing nomadically, it’s not ideal. You’ll likely need a base or fortifications, especially as a new player.

On your first Blood Moon, you may not have the materials to build an entire fortress from scratch, so we recommend fortifying an existing structure. Many of the materials found in the world should suffice for your purposes, but if possible, find a two-story building where you can go upstairs and destroy the stairs.

While this tactic won’t stop zombies completely, it will slow them down long enough for you to get a few shots in with your trusty rifle or pistol!

Complete quests for the traders

Unless you carefully loot every interesting location and house you come across in your first week, chances are you won’t have the resources you need to survive a Blood Moon horde. But the game will point you to a merchant early on. Use this merchant to stock up on vital supplies like weapons, ammo, building materials, and supplies like food, water, and first aid kits.

Some of the first quests for Trader Rekt reward you with a makeshift rifle that, when shot to the head, will kill most zombies in one hit. It’s useful for clearing out a small group of undead, as long as you can land the shot without panicking.

Additionally, Rekt and other vendors will reward you with skill magazines that unlock additional blueprints and improve your skills. These blueprints allow you to craft everything you need to survive, and better skills and stats mean you live longer overall.

General tips and tricks for surviving the blood moon

  • If you can’t build a base or fortify a two-story building, find an elevated position to survive the night. You can climb a skyscraper, perch on the roof of a strip club, or, better yet, on a silo!
  • Whether you’re out with a bow and arrow or a rifle, bring enough ammo to last the entire night. When you think you’ve made enough ammo, make some more just to be safe.
  • Wooden Spikes are one of the most inexpensive and valuable traps you can craft in the game. If you have enough wood (x20 per wooden spike), you can surround your dwelling and reduce the number of undead that get inside.

While there is no shame in dying, especially if you are facing the Blood Moon for the first time, it is simply smart to take steps to give yourself the best chance of survival. Over time, you will find Acquiring legendary partswhich you can use to build better and more effective weapons, and then the Blood Moon won’t feel so scary or challenging!
