DA raises concerns about water supply at Hyundai plant in Georgia

The Department of the Army (DA) has sent a letter to the Georgia Department of Economic Development outlining its water supply concerns related to Hyundai’s upcoming metaplant in the Peach State.

Hyundai is building a $7.6 billion metaplant in Georgia that will produce electric and hybrid vehicles. The DA conducted an evaluation of the South Korean automaker’s Georgia plant that raised some water supply concerns that it shared with the state’s Department of Economic Development.

“…we conclude that the project would have only a minimal impact on municipal and private water supplies and that no water withdrawal permits would be required from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division (Georgia EPD),” the DA wrote in its letter.

The DA has requested a re-evaluation of Hyundai’s water supply permit from the Georgia EPD. On August 23, 2024, Peach State environmental regulators received an application from Hyundai requesting that it construct four new wells to improve its water supply. The long-standing automaker’s application indicates that Hyundai intends to withdraw 25 million gallons of water daily from an underground aquifer used by local residents.

When Hyundai’s Georgia Metaplant was first announced, expectations were high. The new factory was originally intended to be a manufacturing facility focused exclusively on the production of electric vehicles.
