I’ve been really enjoying Delicious in Dungeon, Studio Trigger’s latest anime, and the latest episode might be the best yet… or the worst. I’m honestly not sure yet. There were some things I absolutely loved about the sixth episode, Court Cuisine/Boiled in Salt Water, and some things I just didn’t like.

Let’s start with the positive. The quality of the animation in this episode was a huge step up from previous episodes, and that’s saying something. Trigger’s animation is some of the best in the business, so the starting point is already very high, but there were some truly spectacular moments in this episode.

Diese Szene war einfach großartig.

This scene was absolutely amazing.

Netflix

One scene in particular where Chilchuck faces the Mimic featured some really dynamic and fluid animation that would probably be a bit much if it were constant, but portrayed the tension of the situation very well.

Speaking of the Mimic, it’s probably the most interesting Monster of the Week we’ve seen so far, and for a couple of reasons. Chilchuck’s storied past with the Mimic is a great way to build tension and underscore the monster’s dangerous nature. And having it interact with last episode’s Treasure Bug as part of an ecosystem was a really great way to build out the mythos of the world.

I also enjoyed Laios’ adventures in the mysterious painting world and I’m really excited to see if that will be expanded upon in future episodes. The curious elf-like person from the different stages of the painting world’s life has a strong “recurring character” vibe and I really want to see them again. Will they? It’s hard to say – and I’m not going to look up spoilers from the manga to find out – but I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Who are you?

Netflix

Unfortunately, the two sides of this story really struggled to meet in the middle in this episode. There’s almost no continuity between Laios’ painting adventures and Chilchuck’s encounter with the Mimic, and that hurts the episode greatly. I understand why it turned out that way – the two stories were almost certainly two different manga chapters, neither long enough to warrant a standalone episode – but I would have preferred if the timeline of events had been shifted a bit to connect each of these stories to another that made sense.

This may not sound like music to the ears of manga fans, but for someone who only enjoys the anime occasionally, having two completely different stories happen one after the other in one episode is irritating at best.

As Delicious in Dungeon fleshes out its world a bit, however, some exciting possibilities open up. We don’t yet know if the additional party from the last episode is coming back, and we see more threads emerging just waiting to be pulled and unraveled. Add to that the impending digestion of Falin in the belly of a dragon, and there’s plenty of suspenseful mystery.

Girls, same thing.

I’m curious to see how it all ends, but I hope that episodes like this will be rare, if only for the sake of clarity.

“Delicious in Dungeon” streams new episodes weekly on Netflix.
