California introduces mobile driver’s licenses for smartphones, but the law still requires carrying a physical card

FRESNO, California – Californians will soon be able to download a mobile version of their driver’s license or identification card onto their smartphone.

Governor Gavin Newsom announced Thursday that the feature is part of a broader DMV rollout of a mobile driver’s license app that launched as a pilot program last year.

“We’re partnering with two iconic California companies – Apple and Google – to bring convenient, private and secure driver’s licenses and identification cards right to people’s phones,” Newsom said in a statement. “This is a big step in our efforts to better serve all Californians by meeting people where they are and with the technology people use every day.”

Californians can show their driver’s license or ID at select stores, at TSA security checkpoints at participating airports such as SFO and LAX, and in select apps in Google Wallet or Apple Wallet.

Before residents ditch their wallets altogether, California state law requires them to carry their physical identification card.

However, Newsom says it will be easier for Californians who have to confirm their age and identity.

The new feature will be available to citizens in the smartphone wallet in the coming weeks.
