NASCAR announces 2025 international cup race

NASCAR announces 2025 international cup race

NASCAR will race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City next year, with the official announcement expected to be made on Tuesday, according to Autosport.

The series will use the same track as Formula 1 for its annual Mexican Grand Prix, with the race expected to take place in June next year, although a slight change to the main straight is still being analyzed, with an additional chicane expected.

NASCAR’s top class has very little experience outside the United States. The Cup Series held several exhibition races in Japan between 1996 and 1998 and one in Australia in 1988. However, the last points-paying international Cup race was held in 1958 at Canadian Exposition Stadium in Toronto. Before that, there was another Canadian race in 1952 at Stamford Park in Ontario.

Between 2005 and 2008, Mexico City hosted the NASCAR Xfinity Series four times. The stock car races made an impression on the public and the motorsport world in Mexico, allowing for greater development of this category in the country and leading to the creation of the NASCAR Mexico Series.

Since then, numerous Mexican drivers have tried to climb to the top of the NASCAR rankings, following the path of drivers like Carlos Contreras, who entered NASCAR in 1999 and competed in his first truck race, at a time when most Mexican racers were trying to move up to the IndyCar racing series.

Contreras was followed by important names such as Adrian Fernandez, Michel Jourdain, German Quiroga and the most successful driver in the American series to date, Daniel Suarez – the first foreigner to win a national NASCAR title and the only non-American to win an oval race in the Cup.

NASCAR’s interest in Mexico has led to more drivers seeking opportunities in the United States, even beyond Formula 1. Names like Andres Perez de Lara, Regina Sirvent and Eloy Sebastian have all been part of NASCAR’s diversity program.

The announcement will be made from the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez by NASCAR Chief Operating Officer Steve O’Donell, as well as Suarez, who competes for Trackhouse Racing in the Cup Series, and the event’s organizers. Sources close to the negotiations confirmed that the Cup teams will be joined by NASCAR Xfinity as well as the NASCAR Mexico Division as a support series.
