Wrestler’s career ended with a televised injury

Professional wrestler Sid Vicious, a star at the height of the WrestleMania era of the early 1990s whose career ended with a horrific (and televised) leg injury, has died after a several-year battle with cancer. He was 63.

His death was announced by his son Gunnar Eudy on social media.

“He was a strong, kind and loving man and we will miss his presence very much,” wrote Gunnar Eudy about Vicious, who also performed under the ring names Lord Humungous, Vicious Warrior, Sid Justice and Sycho Sid, but was born Sidney Raymond Eudy on December 6, 1960.

Eudy took his most enduring ring name from the punk rocker and Sex Pistols bassist, who died in 1979. He began wrestling in 1987 and rose to national prominence two years later when he joined World Championship Wrestling. Eudy moved to WWE as Sid Justice in 1991 and became involved in an infamous feud with Hogan a year later.

In the early to mid-1990s, Eudy was one of the headliners of the popular WrestleMania events. Eudy won several world championships for both WWE and WCW and also took part in Monday night raw.

Eudy’s grappling career ended horribly in one of the most gruesome moments in televised wrestling history: During a pay-per-view match in January 2001, Eudy jumped off a turnbuckle and landed awkwardly, breaking his left leg and dangling at a grotesque angle with bone poking through his skin.

Decades later, Eudy recalled the life-changing injury in a television interview, saying he was still recovering from a shoulder injury when a WCW executive persuaded him to return and perform the rope jump. Although Eudy agreed to return, he said, “the stunt was something I didn’t want to do and wasn’t comfortable doing.”
