San Francisco Giants finally reveal final detail of Alex Cobb trade

On July 30, the San Francisco Giants sent Alex Cobb to the Cleveland Guardians for starting pitcher Jacob Bresnahan and a player to be named later. On Monday, it was announced who the final part of the deal would be: an infielder, Nate Furman, according to Robert Murray of FanSided.

Furman, an all-around infielder, was drafted in the fourth round of the 2022 MLB Draft out of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He has made it to Double-A in his two minor league seasons, which he did this season.

However, due to a shoulder injury, the 23-year-old is currently on the 60-day injured list.

In his first year as a professional baseball player in 2023, Furman played 108 games in which he had an OPS of .703 with 11 doubles and 32 RBIs. He hit no home runs, but he did steal 37 bases.

His hitting improved in 2024. In 37 games in High-A, Furman hit seven home runs, two doubles, and a triple while posting a batting average of .338/.417/.500 with an OPS of .917 before being promoted to Double-A.

After his promotion, the infielder struggled before being placed on the injured list on June 29. In 13 Double-A games, he posted a batting average of .125/.300/.200 with two extra-base hits.

Furman is a solid contact tool with some speed as well as a good eye at bat. So far in his career, he has issued 91 walks to his 93 strikeouts, so he will always have a good batting appearance. While he may not have much power, he could be a good top player when it comes to reinforcing the infield.

Although he is currently injured, this seems like a good addition to the Giants system and if he comes back and is healthy, he will likely move up pretty quickly.

The other player in the deal, Jacob Bresnahan, has pitched five games in Single-A since the trade and has struggled, allowing 20 earned runs in 12.2 innings while posting a K/9 of 10.7 but a BB/9 of 7.8.

On the other hand, Alex Cobb returned from the injured list and pitched in two games for the Guardians, allowing five earned runs in 10.1 innings, but only recording four strikeouts and three walks.

With Robbie Ray scheduled to get an MRI, the Giants could use Alex Cobb’s major league depth. Instead, they opted to bolster the farm system and completed that on Monday. Furman may never be a star or even a regular, but he could be a very useful backup.
