The simple little screen lets you focus on your writing – just add the keyboard

If you really want to focus on your writing, you probably shouldn’t be using a computer that’s connected to the highly distracting internet or that’s constantly sending you email notifications. This is where BYOK comes in, as it allows you to do nothing but write.

The name BYOK is an acronym for “Bring Your Own Keyboard,” was invented by American entrepreneur Nick Sjolinder, and is currently the subject of a Kickstarter campaign.

The device takes the form of a small, backlit monochrome LCD screen measuring 165 x 80 x 40 mm. It connects to the user’s existing third-party keyboard via Bluetooth or a USB cable. Depending on which of the three font sizes is selected, the BYOK displays only two to six lines of text at a time.

Using the device is supposedly as simple as turning it on, plugging in the keyboard, and starting typing. Text files can be stored on and accessed from the BYOK’s 16MB internal storage and later transferred to the user’s computer via a USB cable. They can also be uploaded to Google Drive if the user syncs the device with the local Wi-Fi network.

The BYOK can be propped up using its detachable kickstand or attached to an optional magnetic stand using a built-in magnet. Battery life is said to be between five and 20 hours depending on the screen brightness selected – there are four settings to choose from, including zero.

Push buttons on the back of the BYOK allow users to scroll through setup and information screens.
