Veteran singer Mariah Carey’s mother Patricia and sister Alison died on the same day over the weekend, People reported. The singer-songwriter confirmed the news to People in a statement, which read: “I am heartbroken to have lost my mother this past weekend. Unfortunately, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.” Ms. Carey added in the statement: “I feel blessed to have been able to spend the last week with my mother before she passed away,” and she asked her fans to respect her privacy during this difficult time.

“I am grateful for everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time,” People quoted Mariah Carey as saying. Details about the cause of death were not disclosed.

The five-time Grammy winner’s mother, Patricia, was a trained opera singer and singing teacher. She was married to Alfred Roy Carey, with whom she had Mariah, Alison and son Morgan.
