“The terminal, which opened on January 23, 2013 and became operational in March this year, is now over 11 years old and needs modernisation. Epoxy resin flooring is a type of surface coating made by mixing resin and hardener, creating a strong, seamless and glossy surface. It improves the appearance of a commercial space and offers a wide range of benefits such as increased durability, easy maintenance, aesthetic appearance, chemical resistance and cost-effectiveness.
Carpets cover almost half of the security area in the domestic and international wings of the terminal. The dark blue carpet that was laid is difficult to clean and has collected dust and stains over the decades.
“The seamless epoxy floor is more hygienic as it is easy to clean. The tender for the project will be issued soon and work should start by the end of the year. The renovation is expected to be completed in three months,” said Beuria.
There are also plans to replace the carpeting in the 18 passenger bridges with PVC flooring to eliminate the musty smell occasionally caused by water droplets from the ceiling-mounted air conditioning units.
The Carpet replacement The project is estimated at Rs 7 crore. In addition, Rs 5 crore will be spent on renovating the toilets, which will involve replacing all the sanitary fittings and fixtures. The airport has also taken up a Rs 3.2 crore project to replace half of the chairs. The remaining half could be replaced in the second phase of the project.
At Kolkata Airport, passengers have long complained about the dark blue carpets, which are now almost black or dark brown in some places and look even dirtier, especially during heavy airport traffic and when passengers spill food or drinks on the floor.
“Airport floors are not just surfaces, they reflect the soul of the city. While the majority of out-of-town passengers appreciate the design of the ceilings, the floor has always been neglected over the years. It is good that the airport authorities are finally doing something about it. I am looking forward to the change,” said Dwaipayan Roy, a frequent flyer.
