Recap of Season 21 of The Bachelorette, Episode 8

SPOILER ALERT! This post contains details from Monday’s episode of The Bachelorette.

We’re on the home stretch The Bachelorettewhile Jenn Tran is heading toward a possible engagement with one of her three remaining suitors.

This week’s cold open shows there might be trouble in paradise, as Devin is a little unsure about where he stands with Jenn. But all will be revealed in due time, and we’ll have to fight our way through the fantasy suites to find out what’s ailing Devin.

The group is in Hawaii and Jenn is very nervous but also excited about the fantasy suites. Molly Mesnick returns to give Jenn some advice after she and Jason helped organize the Seattle radio date that ended with Sam M’s elimination. She tells Jenn that this week was the most important of her entire experience with Jason because she has time alone to have the deeper conversations necessary before an engagement.

Jenn says she is as ready as she can be for an engagement, although she will need some encouragement from her men.

First up is Devin, who has already told Jenn he loves her and is waiting for her to say it too. They take a helicopter ride around the island before landing near a waterfall, where they enjoy a bottle of champagne while chatting about their relationship. Devin tells Jenn that he’s excited about what their relationship could look like outside of production, and that spending time near his family during Hometowns has only made him more determined to get to this point with her.

Despite all the future talk, Jenn keeps her feelings to herself, saying she still has a hard time accepting a good thing and not questioning it. Devin promises he’ll be there waiting for her when she’s ready to take the step, but at dinner he pushes her even more. She explains that she’s never really seen herself as someone who sabotages herself, but she thinks she just never had the opportunity to because her past relationships were so bad. Now that she’s with Devin, she’s scared things will go wrong. to now, and she feels like she wants to withdraw.

This puts the two in a somewhat uncertain position, as Devin tries to be patient even though he is clearly ahead of Jenn in terms of his feelings. Devin tells Jenn that he is ready to propose to her, and she invites him to the fantasy suite.

The next morning, they seem very happy because Jenn says she is one step closer to accepting this relationship. Devin is still unsure because Jenn won’t tell him for sure that she loves him.

However, Jenn is on her way to her date with Jonathan, so Devin is left alone to think about it himself.

Jenn and Jonathan spend the day wandering around the island on a very casual date where they try new foods and shop at some local markets. They also have a picnic at another waterfall, and Jonathan says he’s trying to open up more and be honest about his feelings. He finds it difficult, but he knows it’s now or never. They both remain reserved during the day portion of the date, but hope that dinner will bring clarity.

At dinner, Jenn tells Jonathan that their hometown date really boosted their confidence in their relationship because she was able to see what they thought about his way of operating in the relationship. They bond over how hard it is for them to trust themselves and really know who they are and what they want, and Jonathan admits that he’s falling in love with her, which is scary but welcome. He also says that he can imagine proposing to her.

Then it’s off to the fantasy suite. The next morning, the happy couple enjoys a few last minutes of time alone, but in the meantime Devin is still unsure and worried about how Jenn is doing.

Last but not least, it’s time for Jenn and Marcus to get their own date. Before he meets Jenn, Marcus tells Jesse about his feelings. He says that Jenn is a little ahead of him and he’s trying to meet her where she is because he doesn’t want to miss out on anything great because he’s holding himself back. He wants to use this day to find out if Jenn is the one for him.

To her credit, Jenn says in confession that she also believes Marcus is not in the same place as her, but she has hope that he will make it.

The couple spend the day on a boat, sailing around the island before stopping for a sunset swim with some manta rays. During the date, Jenn tells Marcus how much she enjoyed visiting with his friends and sister, although she was nervous about it going so well because she knew it would only make her feelings for him stronger – and his might not. However, he says he feels closer to her than he has to anyone in a long time.

At dinner, Marcus opens up more, admitting that the final rose ceremony was hard because his name was called last. Up until that moment, he was very confident about their connection, but then he realized that their future together is not a given. He takes an engagement very seriously, especially given his difficult childhood, but he is confident about his and Jenn’s potential. He also tells her that he is not in love with her yet, and he is nervous that she might decide she would rather be with someone whose feelings are more clear.

Jenn tells Marcus that she Is in love with him, and she doesn’t need the same energy from him yet, but she wants to be honest about where she stands. They’re both willing to put up with that for now, and that’s where the conversation ends (at least on camera) because the couple agrees on a fantasy suite.

The morning brings some clarity, but not complete clarity. Marcus says his feelings for Jenn grow stronger each time he gets to spend more time with her, and he leaves the fantasy suite more confident than ever that their relationship can go to the next level. But Jenn is still worried about whether she can move on, knowing he’s not quite ready yet.

Devin, on the other hand, begins to realize that he can’t move forward without Jenn’s encouragement. He meets with Jesse to talk about his feelings, and after a long conversation, he decides that he needs to know where Jenn stands.

In the final moments of the episode, Devin steps out of the hotel elevator ready to confront Jenn with these feelings.

Fortunately, the audience only has to wait one day to find out what happens, because The Bachelorette: Men spill the beans airs Tuesday nights at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
