August 26, 2024 – Emporia State University and the Kansas Department of Transportation are working together to help every fan get home safely after sporting events and other on-campus events where alcohol is involved.

Fans With a Plan is a dynamic initiative designed to educate students, parents, faculty and the broader Emporia community about the importance of making advance plans for safe transportation if they choose to consume alcohol at ESU events.

“Emporia State cares about the safety of our students and everyone in Hornet Nation. Fans With a Plan is a great resource for our community,” said ESU President Ken Hush.

The partnership will now launch to coincide with the opening of the 2024 ESU football season. The first home game will be Thursday, August 29, against Washburn University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., while the Live at the Hive tailgate area opens at 4:30 p.m.

During this year-long initiative, fans are encouraged to pledge not to drive while under the influence of alcohol and to choose a driver who does not drink alcohol or use a ride-sharing app if they plan to consume alcohol at events.

“Emporia State is proud to partner with the Kansas Drive To Zero Coalition and invites everyone who attends our events to join Hornet Fans With A Plan,” said David Spafford, Emporia State Vice President/Athletics Director. “Wherever you plan to watch or listen to a Hornet game, if you plan to drink, plan to arrive and return home safely by designating a sober driver or using your preferred RideShare app.”

KDOT’s Fans With A Plan program partners with various sporting and entertainment events nationwide, including football, basketball, soccer, motorsports and concerts. The plan has been embraced by everyone from athletes to officials to fans as part of an effort to prevent serious injuries and fatalities related to drunk driving in Kansas.

Gary Herman, behavioral safety manager for KDOT’s Bureau of Transportation Safety, said, “We are excited to partner with Emporia State and have the opportunity to connect with their fans and remind them that proactively providing a sober driver is always the right decision. We are grateful for their prominent rideshare at 15th & Merchant on campus and their extensive communications support.”
