The Without You singer expressed her grief in an emotional statement. Although she did not disclose the cause of death, she urged people to “respect their privacy” during this “impossible time.”

In a brief statement to People, the Emotions singer said: “I am heartbroken to have lost my mother this past weekend. Unfortunately, my sister lost her life the same day in a tragic turn of events.” “I feel blessed to have been able to spend the last week with my mother before she passed away,” she continued, adding: “I am grateful for everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

The five-time Grammy winner’s parents divorced when she was just three years old. Her father, Alfred Roy Cory, died of a rare form of cancer in 2002. Mariah spoke about her strained relationship with her late mother in her 2020 memoir “The Meaning of Mariah Carey.” “Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother was full of contradictions and competing realities. It was never just black and white – it was a whole rainbow of emotions,” she wrote.
