Seahawks sign Jaguars pass rusher Trevis Gipson in exchange for a late-round draft pick in 2025

SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle on Monday acquired pass rusher Trevis Gipson for a late-round draft pick in 2025 from Jacksonville, a trade that gives the Seahawks additional depth amid uncertainty over how long Uchenna Nwosu might be out.

Nwosu, the team’s top edge rusher, suffered a left knee injury on a cut block by offensive lineman Wyatt Teller during the opening drive of Saturday’s final preseason game against Cleveland. ESPN.com reported on Monday that Nwosu has suffered a medial ligament strain that could keep him out for several weeks.

The Seahawks did not practice on Monday. Nwosu missed most of last season after suffering a torn pectoral muscle, and Seattle’s defense suffered greatly because of him. The Seahawks appear to be better prepared for Nwosu’s absence this time around, with Dre’Mont Jones expected to play more on the outside line this season, second-year outside linebacker Derick Hall developing and the addition of Gipson.

Gipson has recorded 11 sacks in four seasons, the first three in Chicago and the last in Tennessee. He signed a one-year, $1.3 million contract as a free agent with $42,500 guaranteed. He would rank behind Josh Hines-Allen, Travon Walker and veteran Arik Armstead in Jacksonville’s rankings.

The Jaguars had expected Gipson to be an improvement over K’Lavon Chaisson, but Gipson was apparently beaten out in training camp by rookie Myles Cole and second-year pro DJ Coleman.

“When you have good players and other teams have a need, of course you listen,” Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said. “You listen to the other teams. It’s no different than the draft process or a free agent deal or anything like that.”

“Trevis has done a great job for us. I think it’s a good situation for him. It’s a good situation for the team he’s going to and obviously the compensation for us. It’s a win-win situation. It gives him the opportunity to play.”
