England’s Georgia Hall will take part in the Solheim Cup for the fifth year in a row after being selected as one of four captains by Suzann Pettersen. Hall, 28, who plays in the Norwegian captain’s team alongside fellow countrywoman Charley Hull, narrowly missed out on automatic qualification.

Pettersen also named Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist and Denmark’s Emily Kristine Pedersen, both returning from last year’s lineup in Andalusia, with the former again named as vice-captain.

Switzerland’s Albane Valenzuela has been selected as one of two newcomers, alongside automatically qualified German Esther Henseleit, to represent Europe when competition begins on September 13 at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia.

Hall, who has been selected automatically in her last four appearances, told Sky Sports: “I’m really excited to get going. It’s always a huge honour to represent Europe and be part of the team. Hopefully we can win it four in a row. Being selected for the first time is obviously a different experience but I feel like I’m playing well, having had some good results over the last few months. It’s just going to be a great week again and hopefully we bring the trophy home.”

Should Europe defend the trophy, it would be the first time in the competition’s history that a team has won the trophy four times in a row. Europe won in 2019 and 2021 and drew in Spain last year to defend the trophy.

Pettersen said of Hall on Sky: “It may not be the biggest surprise, but she’s been there from the start. She’s a really tough player. That’s just something she’s naturally capable of.”

“She loves it. Solheim was one of the highlights of her career and she’s dying to be there in a few weeks.”

Nordqvist will be the Swede with the most caps in the competition with nine appearances and said: “There is no greater honour than to represent Europe in the Solheim Cup, so I am delighted to have been selected for my ninth appearance.”

For Pedersen, it will be her fourth appearance, while 26-year-old Valenzuela is the first player from Switzerland to represent Europe in the competition. She said: “It’s absolutely surreal and a dream come true. I’ve dreamed of being on the team since I was a child.”

Hull, making her seventh appearance, qualified for the top spot on the Ladies European Tour’s Solheim Cup points list after a top-20 finish at the AIG Women’s Open.

Henseleit secured second place in the rankings, while Céline Boutier, Maja Stark, Linn Grant, Leona Maguire, Carlota Ciganda and Madelene Sagström all automatically returned to the team.
