Festival emergency services responded to a report that a person was unresponsive at around 11:29 a.m. on Sunday. Although life-saving measures were attempted immediately, they were unsuccessful.

The woman has since been identified as 39-year-old Kendra Frazer. In a press release, which was Weekly entertainmentThe Pershing County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that an investigation into the cause and manner of death is ongoing.

Burning Man organizers have since offered additional resources and support to attendees in attendance at Black Rock City, including peer support services at Black Rock Rangers headquarters and outposts, and through the Black Rock City Emergency Services Department’s Crisis Support Team.

“The safety and well-being of our employees and our community is our top priority,” the statement continued. “We are cooperating fully with local authorities as they investigate this incident. Out of respect for the privacy of the grieving family, we will not be releasing any further details at this time.”

The festival, an annual event that attracts an average of 70,000 visitors each year, is described as “a global ecosystem of artists, makers and community organizers working together to create art, events and local initiatives around the world.”

News of the death came days after the festival temporarily closed its doors early Saturday due to 12 hours of heavy rain.

Last year, festival-goer Leon Reece, 32, of Truckee, California, died after being found unconscious on the festival grounds, PEOPLE reported. The cause of death was listed as accidental due to “acute intoxication by cocaine, ethanol and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (also known as ecstasy, MDMA or molly),” the medical examiner’s office said.

The 2023 event was additionally hit by heavy rains, forcing tens of thousands of visitors to brave the muddy conditions after the event was called off three days early.

This year’s festival is scheduled to run until September 2nd.
