Congresswoman Lucy McBath and others call for dismissal of members of the Election Committee

A coalition of Georgia lawmakers, clergy and civil rights activists held a press conference at the state Capitol on Monday calling on Gov. Brian Kemp to remove three members of the Georgia State Election Board. The group accused board members Janelle King, Dr. Janice Johnston and Rick Jeffares of violating the state’s ethics code and public meetings law.

The controversy stems from last-minute changes the Republican majority caucus made to the procedures for certifying election results on election night. These changes were criticized by both political camps. During the press conference, the coalition argued that the actions of the committee members were deliberate attempts to compromise the integrity of Georgia’s elections and advance a partisan political agenda.

Congresswoman Lucy McBath also urged Governor Kemp to act immediately, saying that failure to protect the state’s democracy could lead to chaos. A spokesperson for the governor’s office confirmed that they had received the complaint and would seek advice from the attorney general regarding the governor’s authority to act on the matter.

The urgency of the situation is further heightened by the fact that there are only 70 days left until the next elections in Georgia.
