Boyertown with a quick start in field hockey and volleyball

Boyertown 5, Downingtown East 1

Boyertown got off to a great start to the 2024 season thanks to a great day from Emily Ulrich. Ulrich got the Bears on the scoreboard with a corner kick off an assist from Peyton Shellaway, and after a goal from Sarah Rothenberger, Ulrich scored again a few minutes later on a pass from Avery Burkhardt.

Rothenberger scored her second goal just before halftime after an assist from Ulrich and Lauren Grimm finished off a deflected shot from Ulrich in front of the goal. Abby Johnsen made three saves in goal in the win.

Downingtown West 5, Spring-Ford 1

Lauren Vangieri scored the Rams’ only goal, but Spring-Ford had little answer to Downingtown West’s Aimee Largoza, who found the back of the net three times. Allie Pizak and Regan Welsh also contributed to the win.

Girls’ soccer

Villa Maria Academy 3, Upper Perkiomen 1

Upper Perk fell behind 2-0 in the first half after Villa Maria scored the first goal from the penalty spot and the second from a fortunate deflection off the crossbar. UP’s Sarah Straup was awarded her own penalty later in the first half, but Villa Maria’s goalkeeper made a great save.

Lexi Brunner scored the first goal of her high school career from about 25 yards out. Ava Long, the Indians’ goalkeeper, saved 11 shots in a game that was lost.

Downingtown East 1, Owen J. Roberts 0

Boys Football

Boyertown 0, Unionville 0

After a 2-0 loss in the Tiger Kickoff Classic to begin play on Friday, the Bears returned the next day to play a tie against Unionville.

Marple Newtown 4, Pope John Paul II 0

PJP also participated in the Tiger Kickoff Classic earlier in the season, losing to West Chester East on Friday before returning to Marple Newtown High the next day and losing another non-league contest, this time to the hosts of the weekend showcase.

volleyball

Upper Merion 3, Harriton 0

Upper Merion made it two wins in less than 24 hours on Saturday, sweeping Harriton in straight sets. The scores were 25-7, 25-19 and 25-17. Sophia Schweikert had 24 kills and Raven Albrecht added 33 assists and 19 service points (five aces). Maya Giles and Jade Webb shared 12 kills.

Boyertown 3, Wilson 2
Boyertown 3, Pottsville 0

The Bears opened their 2024 season on Saturday with back-to-back wins at Pottsville High School. Boyertown began the morning with a close win over Wilson, falling behind 2-1 but then fought back to win the final two sets. The scores were 31-29, 20-25, 15-25, 25-16 and 15-11.

Boyertown rallied later in the afternoon for a thrilling game that nonetheless ended with a straight-set victory over host Pottsville (25-20, 25-22, 25-23).
