The last decade has been pretty dark for Superman, as his portrayal on the big screen was a huge departure from the inspirational, kind figure that fans have come to love over the years. Thankfully, James Gunn will be taking the character back to his roots with DC’s new chapter. But before we move on to a brighter future, Gunn and DC Studios are addressing the past with Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story.

At a time when superhero productions were far from the norm, Christopher Reeve made people believe that a man could fly, and even after decades Superman remains the gold standard for superhero movies. But Reeve’s influence extends far beyond the realm of superheroes, for despite his accident that left the actor paralyzed from the neck down, Reeve remained a vocal advocate for disability rights and care.

In the upcoming documentary, which is intended to honor the actor’s legacy, his son Matthew Reeve recalled his last encounter with the Superman Star before his riding accident in a clip from the film.

We said goodbye and he waved. That was the last time I saw him on his feet.

The documentary also includes intimate interviews with Reeve’s other two children, Alexandra and Will Reeve; the latter will also appear in the upcoming reboot of Superman.

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve is not the only DC Studios entry celebrating the genius of the original Superman, as James Gunn’s upcoming film also pays homage to the industry icon. Gunn, who grew up with the 1978 film, SupermanReeves son has in his Superman.

Will Reeve, who works as a correspondent for ABC News, will have a brief cameo as a reporter in the David Corenswet-directed film. But even though he only had one line to say, Reeve remembered “I’m more nervous than I am during any TV appearance in my normal job”.

In fact, I was more nervous about it than any other TV appearance in my normal job because there were so many people around me and I had to memorize lines, but still!

But despite his slight nervousness, everything went perfectly. He remembers that everyone on set was super friendly and nice to him and his family.

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story will be in cinemas on September 21st and 25th.
