CEBU CITY, Philippines – A three-year-old girl and her one-year-old little brother were killed when their house caught fire in Purok 1, Brgy. Manga, Tagbilaran City, Bohol on Wednesday night, August 14.

The fire reportedly broke out while the young children were sleeping. Despite their father’s desperate attempt to save them, the two died untimely in the incident.

The family of four lived in a small house made of light materials near an elementary school in Brgy. Manga.

On Wednesday at around 8:10 p.m. the house suddenly caught fire while the father and his children were sleeping inside.

The mother reportedly worked somewhere outside the province of Bohol.

The fire brigade arrived at 8:16 p.m. and brought the fire under control within two minutes. It was completely extinguished by 8:30 p.m.

Lt. Col. John Kareen Escober, chief of the Tagbilaran City Police Station, reported that two children were trapped in the house because the door was blocked.

Her father, 54-year-old Edgardo Lasco, tried to save her but could not. He suffered severe burns and was taken to the Gov. Celestino Gallares Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.

Escober said the fire spread quickly, leaving neighbors unable to rescue the children.

The fire destroyed the family’s house and two neighboring houses and caused an estimated P25,000 in damage. The fire department is currently investigating the cause.

Tagbilaran City Mayor Jane Yap urged residents to pray for Lasco’s recovery.

In a social media post, she revealed that the family made a living selling bamboo furniture from their home. Car batteries, lamps, paint and paint thinner were found in the burned-out house.

While Lasco fights for his life, the children’s bodies were taken to a funeral home.

Yap promised to help the mother return home and cover funeral and hospital expenses. She also advised the public to be careful with electrical wiring and flammable materials in their homes. /clorenciana
