Alabama high school quarterback dies after brain injury in game

An Alabama high school quarterback has died from complications from a brain injury sustained during a football game Friday night.

Caden Tellier, a junior at Morgan Academy, suffered a brain injury during a game against Southern Academy in Selma and was flown to the University of Alabama Hospital at Birmingham, principal Bryan Oliver told AI.com.

The Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) wrote about the incident on Facebook, saying it “fully supports” the school’s decision to suspend all school activities for the week.

“We fully support Morgan Academy’s decision to suspend all school activities this week, giving the community time to come together, reflect and support one another during this heartbreaking time.”

The school announced his death on Saturday evening with a memorial post on social media.

“It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you that Caden Tellier has gone to be with his Lord and Savior,” Oliver wrote in a statement. “Caden loved the Lord with all his heart and was a shining light every day he walked into the halls of Morgan Academy. He was a student, a friend, an athlete and most of all, a follower of Christ.”

A GoFundMe campaign run by the school raised nearly $76,000 to cover medical, air ambulance and funeral expenses, as well as the student’s time off from work.

Fundraiser organizer Kristen Jones said Caden was an organ donor.

“Caden is best known for his kindness, generosity and love,” she wrote. “True to his nature, he once again gives of himself to save the lives of others by donating his organs. His legacy will live on and we thank God that we had the opportunity to love him and be loved by him.”
