Lady Gaga has been making hints for months about her seventh studio album, which she and her fans LG7but she surprised her fans with a little surprise beforehand. On August 16, she released a new single with Bruno Mars called “Die With A Smile”, the pair’s first duet.

In terms of clothing, they’ve been hinting at the duet in recent days. On August 13, Gaga showed off a Bruno Mars t-shirt on Instagram while playing the piano, and the next day, Mars returned the favor by wearing her merchandise.

On the collab’s cover, Mars wears a cowboy hat and Gaga does her best Dolly Parton cosplay, complete with platinum blonde hair as high as the sky. But “Die With A Smile,” which is styled in that vein, has just a hint of country. The anthemic ’70s soul ballad mixes Gaga’s soulful pop melodies with Mars’ old-school R&B influences—plus a little twangy instrumentation that leads to an epic guitar solo.

In a press release, Gaga explained that she was finishing her own album “after a long day” when Mars asked her to come to his studio late one night. “I was blown away when I heard what he had started doing,” she said. “We stayed up all night finishing writing and recording the song. Bruno’s talent is indescribable. His musicianship and vision are on a whole new level. There is no one like him.”

In typical Mars fashion, “Die With A Smile” is both sweepingly romantic and devastating. The song portrays two lovers trying to live out their final moments together, not unlike Gaga’s 2011 hit “The Edge of Glory.”

“If the world was ending, I’d want to be next to you,” they sing in the chorus. “If the party was over and our time on earth was up, I’d just want to hold you for a while and die with a smile.”

As diversity confirmed with Gaga’s representative, “Die With A Smile” is a standalone single and may not appear on LG7for which there is no release date yet.
