Protest planned at Edmond North High School after student asked to remove US flag from car

Edmond North High School students are expected to protest Monday after one of their classmates was banned from flying the American flag on his truck.

After parents of students outside the school district, including state Superintendent Ryan Walters, reached out, they received an email from Edmond Public Schools warning of Monday’s planned flag demonstration.

Edmond Public Schools has said in a statement that the district’s “No Flag” policy is not about patriotism or the flag itself, but about safety. Nevertheless, students at the school have planned a demonstration that is set to begin around 7:30 a.m., but exact details about what might happen during the protest are unknown.

The district said the demonstration could take place on four streets surrounding the school grounds: West Danforth Road, North Kelly Avenue, West Covell Road and Thomas Drive.

The district’s email said Edmond police will be present on campus and directing traffic flow, but the school’s tardiness policies will be adjusted as needed.

State schools Superintendent Ryan Walters spoke on News 9 about the planned protests, saying he encourages students to be patriotic and will ensure that First Amendment rights are protected.

“We’ve seen parents all over the state who are tired of young people being told to hate their country or not be proud of their country,” Walters said. “We want our young people to be proud of our country. It sounds like there are a lot of patriotic students at the school and we want to encourage them to show love for the country.”

The district said it plans to have a normal school day, but would like to let students leave early if Edmond North High School is on the morning commute to school on Monday.
