Eurosport commentator removed from Olympic coverage after sexist comment

Eurosport commentator Bob Ballard was removed from the broadcaster’s Olympic coverage after making a sexist remark.

The Australian women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team, including Mollie O’Callaghan, Shayna Jack, Emma McKeon and Meg Harris, had just won gold when Ballard made a controversial remark.

A clip of his commentary on Paris 2024 together with Lizzie Simmonds quickly spread on social media and sparked outrage.

Ballard was heard saying, “Well, the women are just getting ready. You know how women are… they hang around and put on makeup.”

And Eurosport has taken immediate action to remove the broadcaster from his position. A statement said: “During a segment of Eurosport’s coverage last night, commentator Bob Ballard made an inappropriate comment.

“For this reason, he has been removed from our commentator list with immediate effect.”

The Australian women’s team made history with a time of 3:28.92, securing their fourth consecutive gold medal in the discipline.

Simmonds, in turn, described the comment as “outrageous.”

Ballard apologized two days later, saying: “The comments I made during the Australian freestyle relay medal ceremony on Saturday caused some offense. It was never my intention to upset or disparage anyone and if that happened, I apologize.

“I am a huge supporter of women’s sport. I will miss the Eurosport team very much and wish them all the best for the rest of the Olympics. No further comment will be made. Thank you.”

On TikTok, comments on the video called the remark an example of “casual sexism,” while one person pointed out that the only medals the British team won at the Games were won by women.

This comment comes at a time when the IOC is celebrating Paris 2024 as the “Games of Equality,” as 50 percent of participants are now women.

Ballard, who has shared his views on the swim schedule on social media, has not yet commented on his comment.
