Two WNC high school students die in weekend crash, Transylvania County Schools says

Two Rosman High School students died in an ATV accident on August 25, Sergeant Jim Conta of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said on August 25.

The two teens were traveling south on Old Wagon Road near Presley Fields. Conta said they left the road, struck a tree and were both thrown from the vehicle. He said they were pronounced dead at the scene.

Conta said the accident is currently under investigation. He said they do not suspect intoxication at this time. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol believes excessive speed was the actual cause of the accident.

Brandy O’Shields confirmed to the Hendersonville Times-News that her son, Jayden Reynaldo, 16, was one of the students in the ATV accident.

Transylvania County Schools issued a press release Sunday afternoon about the deaths of the two Rosman students.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic news that two of our beloved Rosman High School students have lost their lives in a devastating accident,” the press release said. “Our community is devastated by an unimaginable loss and our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of these remarkable young people.”

They said they have set up counseling services for students and staff at Rosman.

“The loss of such young, vibrant lives is a powerful reminder of how precious life is and how deeply we are all connected,” the press release said. “As we process this tragedy, we encourage everyone to support one another and find comfort.”

Many high schools in Western North Carolina flooded Rosman with messages of support and condolences on social media on Sunday, including Andrews, Brevard, Cherokee, Franklin, Hayesville, Madison, Mitchell, Murphy, North Henderson, Smoky Mountain, Swain County and West Henderson.

The Hendersonville Times-News has contacted family members, who have not confirmed the names of the victims.
