How Bryce Dallas Howard upped the romance in one of the best episodes of The Mandalorian

At the Fan Expo Canada in Toronto Bryce Dallas HowardDirector and actress, known for her work on The Mandaloriansat down with Colliders Maggie Lovitt for their contributions to the beloved star Wars series. During the panel, Howard revealed a fascinating backstory behind one of the characters from the first season of the series – Omera (Julia Jones), the farmer with whom Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) has a significant connection in the episode “Sanctuary”.




Howard, who directed the episode, recounted how she played a key role in shaping the character Omera, particularly in naming the character. Despite her modesty, Howard admitted, “I don’t get a lot of credit for anything in The Mandalorianbecause that’s Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, and of course George (Lucas), right? And so I’m not going to take credit for anything except this much. I love romance. I love romance. I love it. I love it. I love it.”

This love of romance played a crucial role in the development of the episode. When Howard first read the script, she was excited about the relationship between Din Djarin and Omera. However, she noticed that the farmer’s wife had no name. “Could the farmer’s wife have a name?” she asked Favreau. To which he replied, “Of course, you know, what should the name be?”


The name “Omera” was suggested by Howard’s then assistant Sonia Aurora, Who is a big star Wars Fan Howard expressed her excitement about this post, saying it was “very, very, very, very cool.” Naming the character was an important step as it added more depth and meaning to the role Omera would play in the story.

Howard’s insight into Omera’s character went beyond the name. She was keen to explore the emotional tension that arose from Din Djarin’s inner conflict – his devotion to the Mandalorian faith, which forces him to never take off his helmet, and the budding romantic feelings he develops for Omera. “I really wanted to experience that tension that comes from wearing a helmet and committing yourself to humanity in that way. What happens when you fall in love?” Howard explained.

The episode “Sanctuary” became a fan favorite, in large part due to its subtle and touching exploration of Din Djarin’s humanity through his interactions with Omera. The connection between the two characters offers a glimpse into the emotional depth and complexity that lies behind Din’s stoic facade. Howard’s focus on romance and attention to detail in character development added a richer layer to the series and made the story more relatable and emotional for audiences.
