CASTLE PINES, Colorado – Half of the U.S. Presidents Cup team has been selected, the other half has yet to be decided.

The top six finishers in the points table who are members of the US PGA Tour – LIV players do not need to apply as they are not eligible for the biennial competition – automatically qualified for US captain Jim Furyk’s team at the conclusion of the BMW Championship on Sunday.

FedEx Cup point accumulation began on January 1, 2023, and continued until this week’s second leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs at Castle Pines Golf Club, which Keegan Bradley emerged victorious.

Those still vying for a spot on the team still have a chance to make a lasting impression at the Tour Championship. Furyk will make his six captain’s picks on Tuesday, September 3.

Let’s take a closer look at the first six team members.

Scottie Scheffler

Scheffler led the U.S. points standings – and it wasn’t even close. The world number one is coming off a monster year. However, he will be looking to redeem himself in the biennial competition after finishing with a record of 0-3-1 in his 2022 debut at Quail Hollow. Paired with Sam Burns, Scheffler went 0-2-1 and even sat on the bench on Saturday afternoon. He was seen practicing into the night, but it was no use. Scheffler lost in singles to Sebastian Munoz. Expect Scheffler to be a force to be reckoned with in this round.

Xander Schauffele

Schauffele won two majors – the PGA Championship and the British Open – and put an end to talk that he couldn’t win the big tournaments. Two years ago, he lit a victory cigar at Quail Hollow after playing foursomes and fourball with Patrick Cantlay and winning a pillow fight with Canadian Corey Conners. Schauffele went 3-1 this week. This is his third time representing the U.S. team at the Presidents Cup.

Collin Morikawa

Morikawa finished third in the points standings, with his only win coming in October at the 2023 Zozo Championship. He hit his stride between the Masters (T-3) and the British Open (T-16), finishing no worse than T-16 in 10 singles starts. He had a 2-1 record in 2022, playing with Cameron Young just twice before defeating Mito Pereira in singles.

Clark picked up where he left off last year, when he won the Wells Fargo Championship and the US Open, by winning the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February and climbing to No. 3 in the world rankings after runner-up finishes at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Players Championship in March. He missed the cut in three of the four majors in 2024, but he is emerging as a stalwart of the Stars and Stripes: he was on the US team for the Ryder Cup, at the Paris Olympics and will make his Presidents Cup debut after finishing fourth in the points standings.

Patrick Cantlay

Cantlay is expected to compete in the Presidents Cup for the third consecutive year after finishing fifth in the points standings.

Cantlay has played on every U.S. team since 2019 – both the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. He and Xander Schauffele have become one of the U.S. team’s cores. Two years ago, they beat Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama, 6 and 5, on Thursday and Tom Kim and Matsuyama, 3 and 2, on Friday. Captain Love decided to bench the dynamic duo for a session and then Kim was electrifying, taking them down for their only loss. But Cantlay won the singles match to move to 3-1 for the week. The big question: Have they found a U.S. team cap that fits his head?

Sahith Theegala

Theegala won the Fortinet Championship for the first time in September. Since then, he has continued to develop into one of the top players on tour, posting seven top-10 finishes this season. Unable to take part in the Pro-Am due to a sore wrist, Theegala struggled at the BMW Championship, including a 79 on Saturday, but he held on to the sixth and final automatic qualifying spot and will now make his debut in the team competition.

“It feels great. I was pretty close to the last two teams, but not really. I was probably somewhere between 14 and 18 on both lists, so I knew the feeling of having been close but not having done enough to even deserve a selection or anything,” Theegala said. “That spurred me on a little bit more to not just get into the top 12, but really the top six and secure it.”

Theegala’s only previous experience in an international team competition? At the 2018 Arnold Palmer Cup in France, where he represented the United States as a player for Pepperdine University.
