St. Louis Cardinals season is literally under water after recent travel disaster

The good mood that the St. Louis Cardinals had after their brief three-game winning streak evaporated on Saturday when they lost 6-1 to the Minnesota Twins.

Not only did Sonny Gray have a chance to keep the good times rolling for his team as it tries to make an improbable run to the postseason, but he also had a chance to beat his former team. He allowed five runs in six innings and was outscored by Pablo Lopez, who kept the Cardinals completely off the scoreboard. St. Louis lost 6-0 and fell below the .500 mark. The icing on the cake was that the Cardinals lost their star catcher Willson Contreras to injury.

Somehow, losing 6-0 and Contreras on the same day wasn’t the Cardinals’ lowest point. Apparently, a leak was discovered in the hotel they were staying at, so the team had to evacuate their rooms around 3-4 a.m. local time. Not great!

The last thing a player wants, especially after a frustrating loss like the one the Cardinals suffered, is to be taken out of their hotel room at 3 or 4 a.m., climb down many flights of stairs and move to another hotel. That’s the situation many Cardinals found themselves in.

The team entered the day with a sub-.500 record and 5.5 games out of the third wild card spot. The last thing they needed was a night of poor sleep. Sunday’s game could not only cost them the series in Minnesota, but could also be detrimental in the standings if the teams they’re chasing win their games.

Fortunately, last night’s celebrations didn’t seem to affect their starting pitcher, Erick Fedde, as he had allowed just one run in six innings at the time of this writing. It did seem to have an impact on their hitters, though, as the Cardinals have only managed one run so far. If they win, perhaps this can be a turning point of sorts for them. If they lose, it would be the latest frustrating setback in an unacceptable season in St. Louis.
