Formula 1 race officials will investigate the legality of Alex Albon’s Williams after FIA technical delegate Jo Bauer deemed the car’s new underbody to be non-compliant.

Williams has made a number of improvements to its car for this weekend’s Dutch Grand Prix, including a new underbody and diffuser.

Albon qualified eighth at Zandvoort on Saturday – his best result of the season – but when the FIA carried out post-session checks, it was found that the body floor was “outside the prescribed volume”.

The FIA Technical Delegate referred the matter to the race management, which summoned a representative of the Williams team on Saturday evening.

If the race stewards decide that the underbody of the car does not comply with the regulations, Albon faces disqualification from the qualifying race on Saturday.

Providing details of its upgrades ahead of the weekend, Williams said: “The floor bodywork has been completely updated as part of an all-new floor geometry. The front floor height has been increased and the fences have been re-profiled. The floor edges have been updated with a more pronounced finger geometry.”

Albon’s Williams teammate Logan Sargeant did not take part in qualifying after a serious accident in the final practice session at Zandvoort.
