Award-winning New Bedford firefighter Matthew Forand dies in the line of duty

NEW BEDFORD – Matthew E. Forand, a 45-year-old decorated New Bedford firefighter and father of two, died overnight while on duty at Fire Station 9.

Fire Chief Scott Kruger said Thursday: “It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of New Bedford firefighter Matthew E. Forand in the line of duty.”

He said: “Preliminary information suggests that Matt suffered a medical emergency and passed away during the night while on duty at Fire Station 9.”

Kruger added, “On behalf of the New Bedford Fire Department and all of our members, I would like to extend our deepest condolences to Matt’s family and loved ones, especially his two children.”

Kruger said: “I would like to assure them of the fire service’s support during this time of grief. This is an indescribable loss for them, for his fellow firefighters and for our community.”

Forand graduated from the New Bedford Firefighting Academy in 2006 and was most recently assigned to Engine Co. 9. He has received numerous awards for his dedication to the residents of New Bedford.

At the 2014 Firefighter of the Year Awards, he received the Medal of Valor for rescuing an unconscious resident from the second floor of a burning building on Dartmouth Street.

He also received a Unit Citation as a member of Engine Co. 6 for his efforts in fighting the Royal Crown Apartment fire in March 2023.

Within just 30 minutes of the sad news being released, hundreds of messages of condolence were posted on the New Bedford Fire Department’s Facebook page.

“Matt Forand was an exemplary firefighter who was fully committed to the residents of the city he loved,” said Mayor Jon Mitchell. “His untimely passing is deeply saddening to all who loved and served with him. I extend my deepest condolences to Matt’s family and fellow firefighters.”
