Many die at sea, but not all stories are told | Immigration and asylum

Any death by drowning is tragic, but the media coverage of the Bayesian yacht sinking suggests that some deaths deserve more coverage than others. This summer there were nine deaths involving UK asylum seekers in northern France, where I volunteer with Care4Calais, but the media reported very little.

The “overpopulation” of predators encouraged by conservation laws poses no threat to the return of other species (Letters, August 19). Many scientific studies have proven that these declines are not due to predators. Rather, the loss of our precious butterflies, bats, bees and birds is the result of a broken system of intensive food production that leaves little or no room for wildlife.

The letters about the value of learning German were excellent. How depressing was your headline (Enrich your life with the German language, August 22). Of course, it should have read: “… with the German language” – With (with) is used as a dative.

How nice to be able to live with a capsule wardrobe (How many items of clothing do you actually need? There is a magic number…, August 24). But that probably only works if you live a capsule life. Where is the swimsuit? The hiking boots and the matching fleece dresses, jackets, hats and socks?
