PAK vs. BAN 2024, PAK vs. BAN 1st Friendly Match Report, 21 – 25 August 2024

Bangladesh 565 (Mushfiqur 191, Naseem 3-93) and 30 for 0 (Zakir 15*) beat Pakistan 448 for 6 dec (Rizwan 171*, Shakeel 141) and 146 (Rizwan 51, Mehidy 4-21, Shakib 3-44) by ten wickets

Riding on the confidence Mushfiqur Rahim’s 191 on day four had instilled in their camp, a spirited Bangladesh bowling unit thrashed Pakistan for 146 on day five, handing them their fifth defeat in a run of nine winless home Tests. Although Pakistan have not won a home Test since against South Africa in February 2021, this was Bangladesh’s first Test win against Pakistan – a ten-wicket victory at that – and a rare away victory. Before this match, they had won just two Tests on foreign soil in the last seven years.

If the fourth day was about Bangladesh slowly establishing their control of the game, the final day was about storming to victory. After the fast bowlers had taken out three of Pakistan’s top four batters, the spinning duo of Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz shared the remaining seven wickets, with the ball now spinning more than it had on Saturday and also bouncing a little more unevenly.

Young fast bowler Nahid Rana pushed the pace to nearly 150 kmph to catch Babar Azam, Shakib smothered with his stump-to-stump lines from both sides of the wicket and Mehidy struck with his nimble offbreaks to regularly create exciting moments and wicket-taking opportunities.

After Pakistan – led mainly by Mohammad Rizwan with 51 – allowed Bangladesh to win by just 30 runs in the second over, Bangladesh chased the runs in 6.3 overs.

Even though the ball was not swinging as much as it had the night before, the Bangladeshi quicks were already preparing their push for victory in the first session. With Saim Ayub already out of the game on the fourth day, Shan Masood fell early when he pushed Hasan Mahmud to the wicketkeeper. The on-field umpire did not give the ball away, but Bangladesh reviewed the ball and saw the decision overturned after a spike on UltraEdge.

The score of 28-2 could have been 28-3 when Babar Azam finished his second throw at an angle away from him towards the goalkeeper, but Litton Das failed to capitalise on the chance to his right and Babar survived two.

He gained confidence with some runs and boundaries, but Nahid noticed his weaknesses in footwork and plotted his downfall. He regularly pelted Babar with short balls at over 145 kmph to force him on the defensive, and when he bowled one outside the off, Babar’s feet did not move fast and far enough and his drive ended with him continuing for 22. Thus began the wicket decline, which was only briefly halted by a counter-attacking innings from Rizwan before the lunch break.

Saud Shakeel stepped out to prevent Shakib’s turn but missed and was stumped for a duck. A patient Abdullah Shafique then threw away his wicket with just over three overs left until lunch. He attempted a wild swing over mid-off, only to give Shadman Islam a leading edge at backward point. Two balls later, Mehidy Agha Salman pulled forward with a teasing off-break and pulled his edge, with Shadman this time taking a sharp catch to his left at slip.

Rizwan hit four boundaries on either side of the wicket in between to make up some of the deficit, which was 50 when he left. He attacked a slightly tired Nahid for a hat-trick of fours and followed it up with a slog sweep in the next over for another boundary, scoring 26 runs in the two overs. But he had to curb his instincts after Salman’s dismissal and managed the strike after the lunch break when Shaheen Shah Afridi was caught in front by a Mehidy ball that barely bounced.

Pakistan were still six points behind at 111 for 7 at this point. They took the lead but Naseem Shah soon dropped a catch to midwicket before Rizwan took on the responsibility of building some sort of lead with his tenth Test half-century. He went hard at the ball throughout his innings and that earned him his wicket as he took a chop-on to Mehidy, who also caught Mohammad Ali to wrap up the hosts.

Zakir Hasan and Shadman then ensured that Bangladesh crossed the finish line unscathed. Zakir hit three fours in his 14 runs and scored the decisive runs with a sweep to the free fine-leg fence.
