For many, a good day starts with a good cup of coffee.

To make the perfect cup of coffee, some Philadelphia cafe owners who hail from countries around the world use tools and methods reminiscent of their cultural backgrounds. With these brewing practices, these owners are not only sharing a part of themselves, but they’re also providing immigrant communities with an opportunity to feel at home in shops like theirs across the city.

Four local cafe owners walked us through their process:

At Ray’s Café and Teahouse, Grace Chen uses the siphon brewing method from its Taiwanese heritage

At Café Com LeiteHelena Guimaraes conjures up a Brazilian pourover with a metal kettle (“bule”)

At Alif Brew & Mini Mart, Hayat Ali uses a traditional Ethiopian coffee pot (“Jebena”) and burns incense before serving ceremonial coffee

At Amma’s South Indian CuisineBalakrishnan Duraisamy uses the Madras filter for a foamy result

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle L. Parker attended the Democratic National Convention last week as a superdelegate. And although she wasn’t allowed to speak on the main stage, she used the opportunity to network and socialize in Chicago.

The convention allowed Parker to build contacts with Democrats. If Vice President Kamala Harris wins the White House, those connections could be important in securing federal funding for Philadelphia, Parker said.

Behind the scenes: All this has happened while Parker’s own political operation is in transition. She has no campaign staff.

Get the inside scoop on Parker’s interviews and learn more about how she made the most of her time in Chicago.

🎶 Today’s Sunday track goes like this: “When it’s all said and done, I want you for life.” I’m still reliving Childish Gambino’s incredible show this week.

Attention all those who see R&B singer (and cheesesteak lover) Omar Apollo in Mann tonight: He wants you to dance through your heartbreak. Read his conversation with arts and culture reporter Rosa Cartagena ahead of his concert.

👋🏽 That’s all for now. Take care and have a nice day.
