Californians will soon be able to add their driver’s license to their Apple Wallet – but there is a catch.

Apple has announced that California residents will soon be able to add their driver’s licenses and identification cards to Apple Wallet as part of California’s Mobile Driver License (mDL) pilot project.

The headlines determine: Scheduled to roll out “this fall” and limited to 1.5 million participants, the plan is to allow users to pass through certain terminals at Los Angeles International and San Francisco International airports without handing over their physical driver’s license or phone.

  • To enroll in the pilot program, users must scan their driver’s license or ID card and a photo of their face.
  • Participants in the program have the opportunity to use mobile IDs to purchase age-restricted products at certain retail stores in Sacramento and to pass through certain airport security checkpoints.

The background story: This initiative expands existing mobile ID programs in Arizona, Maryland, Colorado, Georgia and Ohio, as well as New York’s previously launched Mobile ID app.

  • Government mobile ID apps have raised security concerns, including the possibility that driver’s licenses could be used by police as a pretext to confiscate cell phones during routine checks or to prevent people from filming their interactions with police.
  • Apple assures that the IDs stored in Apple Wallet are not accessible to third parties, including Apple itself. The driver’s license information is stored only on the user’s device and cannot be accessed unless the user presents it.
  • In addition, neither Apple nor the issuing government agency have access to information about when, where and to whom a user presents their driver’s license or ID card.
