The St. Louis Cardinals need to change something before it’s too late.

St. Louis has struggled recently and is now disappointingly one game under .500 at 60-61. The Cardinals are also now four games out of a wild card spot in the National League. Despite that being the case, the Cardinals have already turned things around once this season.

The Cardinals were at the bottom of the National League table for a while, but have fought their way back up. There is still time for the Cardinals to make it back up. They may need reinforcements to get their offense going.

One player who is surprisingly available, according to Brent Maguire of MLB.com, is Colorado Rockies All-Star Elias Díaz.

“Elias Díaz made baseball history when he was named MVP of the 2023 All-Star Game for the Rockies. Now, Colorado appears to have made its catcher available to the rest of the league,” Maguire said. “Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported that the Rockies placed Díaz on waivers on Wednesday, though Colorado has not confirmed the news.

“If he is placed on the waivers list, the other 29 teams will have a chance to sign Díaz, who will make about $1.5 million for the remainder of the season. Claim priority is based on the inverse winning percentage, meaning teams with worse records will have an advantage in signing Díaz. If Díaz goes unclaimed, his five years of MLB experience will allow him to decline a trade to the minors if the Rockies try to sign him outright. At that point, Díaz could become a free agent.”

Díaz could make sense for the Cardinals if they want someone who can serve as more of a designated hitter while also getting some time at catcher. St. Louis is currently well-stocked at the catcher position, but needs to do something.
