Jack Russell of Great White is dead: Rock frontman was 63

Jack Russell, the former frontman of the 1980s and 1990s glam rockers Great White, has died at the age of 63.

The message comes from the Instagram page of Jack Russell’s Great White, the band name under which the frontman toured after the group disbanded in 2001.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of our beloved Jack Patrick Russell – father, husband, cousin, uncle and friend,” the statement begins, adding that the singer passed away “peacefully” surrounded by his wife Heather Ann, son Matthew Hucko and other family and friends. “Jack will be loved and remembered for his sense of humor, extraordinary zest for life and unwavering contribution to rock ‘n’ roll, where his legacy will live on and thrive forever.”

The family asks for privacy and said details of a public memorial service will be announced at a later date.

On Great White’s Instagram page, Russell’s original bandmates expressed their “deepest condolences to Jack Russell’s family. We hope they find comfort in knowing that Jack’s incredible voice will live on forever.” The statement ended with the words: “Rest in peace, one of rock’s greatest champions.”

Great White had six songs on the Billboard Hot 100 in the late 80s and early 90s, including the top 5 hit “Once Bitten Twice Shy,” which reached number 5 in 1989 and whose music video was played on a loop on MTV. The album for the song, 1989 …Twice shywas a top 10 hit on the Billboard 200 chart, peaking at number 9.

After the band disbanded in 2001, the lead singer toured as Jack Russell’s Great White – most notoriously his headlining performance at The Station nightclub in Rhode Island in 2003, when pyrotechnics sparked a fire that killed 100 people, including bandmate Ty Longley, and injured 230. Russell’s tour manager, Daniel Biechele, pleaded guilty to 100 counts of involuntary manslaughter in 2006 and served two of a 15-year sentence. The Station’s owners, Jeffrey and Michael Derderian, pleaded no contest, with Michael serving nearly three years in prison and Jeffrey being sentenced to community service. The band also settled with victims in several court cases.

Last month, Russell announced his retirement from touring on his Instagram page after being diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia and Multisystem Atrophy. “Words cannot express my gratitude for the many years of memories, love and support,” he said in the retirement announcement. “Thank you for letting me live my dreams.”
