Has the Solheim Cup ever been held two years in a row? USA and Europe ready for 2024

It goes without saying that the USA women will be looking to break European dominance this year after losing for the third time in a row last year. With so little time to prepare due to the changed schedule, the natural question is: “Can they do it?”

Why is the Solheim Cup played in two consecutive years?

For only the second time in the history of the event, the Solheim Cup will be held in two consecutive years. In fact, the tournament was played in September at Finca Cortesin in Andalusia, Spain, and this year it will be played from September 13-15 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia. The reason for this is understandably the Covid-19 pandemic.

In case you didn’t know, the Solheim Cup and the Ryder Cup are usually played in separate years so that each can bask in its own glory. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, the 2020 Ryder Cup had to be postponed to 2021, the same year in which the Solheim Cup was supposed to take place. Since the tournament was already planned for 2021 and 2023, the dates were kept. Conversely, it was decided to bring the date forward by a year in order to achieve a balanced number of participants in the women’s tournament. For this purpose, the games are planned until 2026, with Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands taking over the hosting role.

Given that this is only the second time this has happened, you may be wondering what it was like the first time. Since the tournament has only been held in even-numbered years since 1990, The only other time the date was moved to an odd year was after the terrorist attacks of September 11, when the Ryder Cup was played in 2002 rather than 2001.

The result was that the The Solheim Cup was held in both 2002 and 2003. something that continues to this day. As things stand, US captain Stacy Lewis and European captain Suzann Pettersen will retain their positions for the 2024 edition of the tournament.

When and where will the 2024 Solheim Cup take place?

The Solheim Cup 2024 will take place from 10 to 15 September at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia, USA. The club, known for hosting four Presidents Cups, is hosting the Solheim Cup for the first time. Tuesday to Thursday are practice days, with competitions taking place Friday to Sunday.
