The Lebanese Health Ministry said three people were killed in Israeli attacks in the south of the country on Sunday.

Israel launched attacks against Hezbollah, which announced a large-scale attack on Israel.

One person was killed in an “Israeli drone attack on a car in the village of Khiam,” the Health Ministry said in a statement.

The Amal movement, an ally of Hezbollah, later announced that a fighter from Khiam had been killed.

The Health Ministry said two people were killed “in the Israeli occupation force’s attack on the village of Tiri,” but did not specify whether they were fighters or civilians.

It had also been reported earlier that two people, including a Syrian, had been injured in a “series of Israeli attacks” in the south.

Israel launched airstrikes on Lebanon on Sunday, saying it had foiled a large-scale attack by Hezbollah, while the Lebanese group said it had carried out its own attacks to avenge the killing of a senior commander.

The Iran-backed movement has regularly exchanged fire with Israel in support of its ally Hamas since the militant Palestinian group’s attack on Israel on October 7 sparked the Gaza war.

But fears of a larger regional conflagration grew after top Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr was killed in an Israeli attack on Beirut’s southern suburbs in late July, sparking a desire for revenge.

According to an AFP count, around 605 people have been killed in cross-border violence in Lebanon since October, most of them Hezbollah fighters, but including at least 131 civilians.

On the Israeli side, including the annexed Golan Heights, authorities announced the deaths of at least 23 soldiers and 26 civilians.
