Nicolas Cage lost the role in The Green Hornet because of his bizarre Caribbean accent

Nicolas Cage lost a role in Seth Rogen’s film “The Green Hornet” because Rogen suggested he use a Caribbean accent.

Rogen met Cage when he and his writing and producing partner Evan Goldberg began casting for the 2011 film in which the First Time star played the titular superhero.

They had a series of phone conversations before meeting in person, and during one conversation the star of The Knights Templar explained what he wanted his character to look like – a bald man with tattooed hair.

“And we thought, ‘OK…’ We kind of got it,” Rogen recalled on the Howard Stern Show.

A few days later, Cage decided to abandon the idea, saying he did not want to show the look on camera because it was a transformation he had seriously considered in real life.

The comedy star said: “I remember laughing hysterically when he said that on the phone – and then stopped because I realized it wasn’t a joke.”

Their dealings with the veteran actor became even stranger when he came up with the idea of playing his role as a “white man from the Bahamas.” Rogen and Goldberg agreed to discuss the suggestion further over dinner at the home of then-Sony Pictures executive Amy Pascal.

However, the meeting took an awkward turn almost immediately, as Cage began boasting about his Caribbean accent upon arrival.

“Literally within 60 seconds, we were all sitting in the house and he was standing in front of us reciting a monologue in a Jamaican accent,” Rogen said. “And we just thought, ‘It’s happening.'”

“(His) monologue wasn’t in the script. And it had nothing to do with the script. At that point I thought, ‘I don’t think he even read the script,'” the This Is the End star explained, adding that he was met with stunned silence.

“It ends, and it’s like he’s just done a backflip and is waiting for applause,” Rogen continued. “At that point, everyone looks to me to express the group reaction. I was like, ‘It was OK. Cool. Thanks. We should talk about it. That’s not how we imagined the character.'”

Cage was confused by the lack of praise, his demeanor “immediately collapsed” and he decided to leave immediately.

“We all sit down to dinner and almost immediately he gets up and leaves,” Rogen revealed.

Cage was never actually intended for the role in “The Green Hornet,” in which he eventually starred alongside Cameron Diaz, Christoph Waltz, Jay Chou, Edward James Olmos, David Harbour and Tom Wilkinson.
